Tutorial Sheet of Figures

Context:

In this tutorial, we were separated into groups and given a number. Each group was given a sheet with paragraphs and figures to read and study. Each group had a different sheet. The TAs did not tell us for what reason, and just encouraged us to read over it well. After 10 minutes, the papers were taken from us and new groups were formed based on matching numbers. I was in the group of two’s, and we had to summarize for our group what our paper was about. We were also each given the above sheet full of figures, and each of us recognized a specific one. Therefore, we each had to explain our figure based on what we read and develop appropriate captions for each figure.

Reflection
_______________

This was a great impromptu activity as it tested our ability to retain information that was read, and also select appropriate captions for figures that we have limited information regarding. It was challenging to try and explain to our group members what we read and at the same time explain the figure to come up with a caption that was effective in its description. If I were to do things differently, it would be to read my original sheet more carefully and thoroughly, as well as examine my figure more as well. I learned that captions are crucial in summarizing a figure and giving the reader a quick background of what he or she is seeing. They are also not easy to write as they have to be concise but thorough. This is an important skill as a figure without a caption or description can be confusing, as well as waste the reader’s time in trying to figure out what the image in trying to convey.
